OF SCIENCE & INDUSTRY)

ETHNOMATH — Redefining Mathematics Education Through Cultural Inclusion

Overview:
The ETHNOMATH Poster is a visually compelling educational design project that examines the intersection of cultural narratives and mathematical principles, advocating for inclusivity within STE(A)M learning contexts. Created for the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), the poster serves as a visual call to action, urging educators and learners to recognize and integrate diverse mathematical perspectives from indigenous and diasporic cultures.

Challenge:
The objective was to critically examine the cultural dimensions of mathematics education and convey the message through a striking visual format suitable for exhibition at OMSI. Key challenges included:

  • Developing a design that synthesizes complex mathematical concepts with cultural narratives, creating an educational tool that is both visually engaging and intellectually stimulating.

  • Ensuring that the design effectively communicates the value of ethnomathematics as a vital component of inclusive education.

  • Creating a cohesive visual language that resonates with diverse audiences, from educators and students to museum visitors.

Approach:

  • Research & Concept Development: Conducted comprehensive research into ethnomathematics, focusing on how mathematical principles are embedded in indigenous knowledge systems and cultural practices.

  • Design Strategy: Translated research insights into visual motifs that merge art and mathematics, incorporating symbolic imagery and typographic elements inspired by indigenous cultures and diasporic traditions.

  • Design Execution: Leveraged Adobe Creative Suite to develop a visually impactful poster, integrating:

    • Symbolic imagery and geometric forms that reference cultural artifacts and indigenous patterns.

    • A bold, structured layout that draws viewers in while reinforcing mathematical symmetry and balance.

    • Typography and color palettes that reflect cultural vibrancy, creating a visually cohesive and engaging educational tool.

Deliverables:

  • Educational poster design exhibited at OMSI

  • Digital assets for educational and promotional use

  • Research insights translated into visual storytelling, emphasizing the cultural diversity of mathematical thought

Impact & Outcomes:

  • Positioned the ETHNOMATH Poster as a thought-provoking educational tool, effectively conveying the value of cultural inclusivity in mathematics education.

  • Demonstrated expertise in integrating cultural research into educational design, creating a visually engaging piece that serves as both art and advocacy.

  • Stimulated discourse on the intersection of culture and mathematics, reinforcing the imperative of diverse pedagogical approaches in STE(A)M learning contexts.
